The Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, which is right next to Janvier, has reported its first case of COVID-19 in the community. This makes it the first First Nation in the Wood Buffalo area to have a known case of the virus.

The news was announced by Chief Vern Janvier on Facebook on Thursday afternoon. In his post, Janvier says anyone who has been in contact with the patient will be called or notified.

Anyone who wants a test can receive one at the community’s health centre starting on May 19.

There is also housing available for anyone who tests positive to quarantine.

“From here on, it’s important to stay at home and not visit around to prevent spread,” he writes. “I know its hard, but to prevent spread we have to be smart and show respect for one another.”
