CALGARY – Former federal Conservative cabinet minister Jason Kenney will be taking a seat in the Alberta legislature following a runaway victory last night in a provincial byelection.

The leader of the United Conservative Party took 71 per cent of the vote in Calgary-Lougheed to easily trounce six other candidates, including provincial Liberal Leader David Khan.

The N-D-P was second with just over 16 per cent and the Liberals came in third with about nine per cent.

In his victory speech, Kenney said that if the party works hard, it can defeat what he called a “job killing socialist government” under N-D-P Premier Rachel Notley.

For her part, Notley congratulated Kenney on Twitter, saying she looks forward to debating him in the legislature.

Kenney was the driving force behind the merger of Alberta’s two centre-right parties, the Progressive Conservatives and the Wildrose and won the leadership of the U-C-P in October.
