Alberta municipalities unite in the need for market access

Alberta’s need for improved market access to transport its energy products was the focus of many resolutions at AUMA’s 2016 Convention. Members overwhelmingly approved resolutions relating to support for the Northern Gateway project, opposition to tanker bans on the BC coastline, and improving market access for oil and natural gas exports.

The need for multiple pipelines out of Alberta in order to get energy products to diverse markets is key to growing our provincial and national economies. For example, during the Future of Energy presentation at the AUMA Convention, the president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers pointed out that 70 per cent of the oil used by Eastern provinces is currently imported from other countries. We should be providing energy to our own country as it would benefit Alberta producers, eastern refiners, the government, and Canada as a whole.

AUMA will continue to advocate for the safe and responsible development of pipeline infrastructure, as improved market access will help create short and long-term jobs, increase tax revenue, and provide opportunities to capitalize on overseas markets.
