Canada’s oil export pipelines are in need of a relief valve.

If there’s any doubt of how full these pipelines are, the chart above, posted to Twitter on Wednesday by University of Alberta professor Andrew Leach, makes it clear.

The pipeline shortage has resulted in a backlog of oil in Canada, and depressed pricing, although the spread between Canadian heavy oil and U.S. light oil has narrowed in recent days.

Leach used pipeline throughput data from the National Energy Board to show the volume and type of crude oil flowing through Enbridge’s Canadian Mainline, TransCanada’s Keystone Pipeline and Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline from Jan. 2007 to Jan. 2018.
