Indigenous Strategy: ii’ taa’poh’to’p
The University of Calgary acknowledges that many of its sites are located on the traditional territories of First Nations Peoples of Treaty 7. The Treaty 7 Lands in Southern Alberta are home to the Kainai Nation, Piikani Nation, Siksika Nation, Tsuu T’ina Nation, and the Bearspaw, Chiniki and Wesley (Stoney- Nakoda) Nations. Calgary is also home to Region 3 of the Métis Nation of Alberta.
In 2016, the University’s Indigenous Strategy Task Force was called together. Through the Strategy, the University is committed to creating a rich, vibrant and culturally competent campus – one that welcomes and supports Indigenous learners, is inclusive of Indigenous perspectives in teaching and learning, encourages Indigenous community partnerships in research and academic programming and is appropriate and thoughtful in its response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s ‘Calls to Action’.
The Faculty of Social Work and the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary jointly invite applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Indigenous Child Well-being. They are seeking a scholar who will establish and maintain an active research program leading to excellence in our understanding of Indigenous Child Well-being. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (with tenure) and will be nominated for a CRC Tier II position. The area of specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates with a focus on Indigenous Child Well-being. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2019, but is negotiable.
This program will be aligned with the strategic plans of the University of Calgary, the Faculty of Social Work, and the Werklund School of Education, along with the university’s Indigenous Strategy ii’ taa’ poh’ to’ p.
The University of Calgary requires the successful candidate to have a PhD in Social Work or Education, and relevant post-doctoral experience. The appointee’s research agenda may be grounded in any of the fields of Indigenous Child Well-being. The Chair will have the opportunity to be part of a prolific and diverse research environment in the Faculty of Social Work and the Werklund School of Education, with access to state of the art core infrastructure. Outstanding opportunities for mentorship and collaboration are available with established research programs in child and maternal health, prevention of domestic violence, children’s mental health, etc. Additionally, the Chair will play an important role in teaching and research supervision of students in undergraduate and graduate programs and will participate in the leadership of indigenous related research, and education. Service to these two faculties, the University, and the community is also expected. The Chair is expected to have and maintain an active engagement with Indigenous communities.
Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process.
The successful candidate at the Assistant Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a track record of publications in high-quality journals, securing external research funding, and effectiveness in teaching at the University level. The successful candidate at the Associate Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a strong track record of publications in high-quality journals, evidence of securing ongoing external research funding, effectiveness in teaching at the University level, and evidence of effective graduate student supervision.
